If you’ve tried to refill your estradiol patch recently and been told it’s on backorder, you’re not imagining things, and you’re not alone. Pharmacies across the country are running into the same wall, and we know how unsettling it is to feel like your hormone therapy could get interrupted without warning.

We wanted to break down what’s actually going on, why it’s happening, and most importantly, what you can do right now to keep your care on track.

What’s Going On with the Estradiol Patch Shortage

Estradiol patches, including popular brands like Vivelle-Dot, Climara, and their generic equivalents, are in short supply nationwide. Some pharmacies have certain strengths or brands in stock while others fifty miles away have none. It’s inconsistent, frustrating, and largely out of anyone’s control, including ours.

Why It’s Happening

A few things are colliding at once:

  • Demand has surged. Hormone therapy has become far more accessible and destigmatized in the last year, and more women are starting and staying on it longer than before.

  • Supply hasn’t kept pace. Only a handful of manufacturers make the estradiol patch, and their production capacity simply wasn’t built for this level of demand.

  • Manufacturing and supply chain hiccups. Several manufacturers have reported disruptions that have slowed how quickly they can restock.

The honest answer is that no one, including the manufacturers themselves, can tell us exactly when this will fully resolve. Some industry estimates suggest it could continue for months, possibly longer. We wish we had a firmer timeline to give you. What we can promise is that we’re doing everything we can on our end to help you avoid a gap in care.

What to Do Next

Here’s how we’d recommend approaching this if your patch is unavailable:

Call a few local pharmacies to check stock

Availability is changing day to day and pharmacy to pharmacy, so a quick call can sometimes save you the whole workaround below. Once you’ve found a pharmacy that has it, let us know and we’ll get your prescription sent over.

Consider The HRT Club

This is a membership pharmacy service that has consistently been able to keep up with estradiol patch supply. For many patients it has been a most reliable way to avoid interruptions altogether.

Try Amazon Pharmacy or Cost Plus Drug Company

If a membership isn’t something you want to take on, these two have also been keeping up with supply so far. We can’t guarantee that will hold, since availability can shift at any time.

A quick note on logistics: we’re not able to call around to pharmacies on your behalf, and we can only send your prescription to one pharmacy at a time. Once you’ve identified where you’d like to fill it, just send us a message and we’ll take it from there.

    Estradiol Patch Alternatives Worth Considering

If the patch continues to be hard to come by, there are two alternatives that can bridge the gap without derailing your treatment.

Estradiol gel packets are readily available and sometimes covered by insurance, which makes them a straightforward swap for a lot of patients.

Compounded estradiol cream is another option, and it can be a more affordable route if insurance won’t cover the gel packets. One added perk: if you’re also using testosterone cream, we can have both compounded together into a single prescription, which simplifies your routine.

Either of these can be a temporary bridge. Once patches are reliably back in stock, you’re welcome to switch back if that’s your preference.

    We’re In This With You

We know this Estradiol patch shortage is disruptive, and we know it can feel scary to think about a gap in a therapy that’s helping you feel like yourself again. We don’t have a crystal ball for when this resolves, but we’re keeping a close eye on availability and will keep sharing what we learn. In the meantime, reach out to us anytime you need help navigating this. You’re not managing it alone.
